The next card making class will be held on November 12th at Judy's Scrappin' Stampin' and Gifts in Orono. There are slots still available in the afternoon class from 1:30 - 3:30. Card Making Class at Judy's

Hello everyone. There will be another card making class at Judy's on September 10th. The morning session is full, but there are spots in the afternoon class which starts at 1:30. This class is called "The Colors of Fall". Just give Judy a call at 889-8000 to be placed on the list. So far the only items you will need to bring would be your favorite adhesive and also some pop dots or foam dots. Everything else will be provided. The cost is $25 per person. It is recommended that if you plan to attend, you should call Judy no later than September 3rd so all supplies can be ready for everyone.

If you are signed up for the card making class that is being held at Judy's on March 19th, you should bring the following items with you.

Black and brown ink pads, your favorite adhesive, glue pen, pop dots, scissors and tweezers for handling small items. If you have yellow, gold and olive green ink pads, you can bring them also, but if not, I will have mine with me. Looking forward to seeing you on March 19^th.

Hope you are enjoying your winter so far. I can't believe all the snow we had last Friday the 21st. The squirrels have to leap out of the snow only to end up deep in it again. Funny to watch.

Surprise!

I'm hijacking the blog for a quick technique post. I was able to steal away this past weekend and do some scraping and I promised Judy months ago that if I ever created again that I'd post. So, in keeping with my promise, here's a little tutorial:

(Actually, I'm pretty sure, I've shown this idea before but it was many moons ago and sometimes it's just nice to have an idea repeated in a different way to get the juices flowing, right?!)

Masking:

1- Pick your sticker, vinyl letter, or shape and place where you want it on your paper.

2 - Using ink, chalk, or paint add color over the top of your sticker and blend into the paper until you have the shade you are looking for.

3- Remove sticker!

See, easy!

It's a fun way to add a new look to your pages, cards and such.

Here is an easy way you can make any treasure box, like the ones in our last post. Take some paper and Amy’s favorite white, sticky Mod Podge or Decoupage and cover an empty Cigar Box.

Cigar boxes are great they come in many different sizes and shapes, some with hinges and some even in a shape of a book.

We have everything you need to get started, even the cigar boxes. Sorry No Cigars!

My friend Kathy brought me this ball

she recieved from her friend Nancy Levitt.

When you unravel it you get a surpise in the middle

Of course, I loved the idea-because in my back room I had a ton of small pieces of ribbon, lace and yarn. Not sure what I ever would have done with it all. I dumped all this stuff on the table and started to tie them together to make one long strip. Then I wrapped it all around the candy and tied on a tag with a Valentine's message. What a great way to use up some of your little pieces. Thank you to Nancy for allowing us to share a great idea (check her website at nancyleavit.com)

This is the class for those of you who want to have a stash of cards for all kinds of reasons - thank yous, get well, sympathy - those cards that are always nice to have on hand. As always, bring your favorite adhesives, foam tape or pop-dots and be prepared for fun!

BANGLE BRACELETS - $75 (all day class includes supplies)
Saturday, Dec. 12th - 10am
Come learn how to make your own beautiful bangle bracelets. In this class you will learn wire wrapping skills as well as other jewelry making techniques. All supplies are included and the bracelets will be made out of Sterling Silver! Plan to be in class for about 6 hours with a break for lunch.

Upcoming Class info - Orbit Earrings

We have a few more jewelry classes coming up that are being taught by the lovely Rose Boynton.

Nov. 14th, Rose will be in the shop teaching a class on Orbit Earrings (picture above) Aren't these cool? And, just in time for Christmas too. My daughter is dying - DYING - to learn how to make these, and I'm not exaggerating. The class will run from 10 am to 12 pm. It is $25 dollars and ALL supplies are included. Space is limited and you must register in advance.

Also, depending on response, Rose is looking at teaching an all day class on December 12th. The featured items will be Bangle Bracelets. Another great class with wonderful gift giving possibilities. She will be teaching some wire wrapping skills along with this class as well as other great jewelry making tips and tricks. Halloween Fun!

These are absolutely SPOOKTACULAR!!!

Judy whipped these little cuties up and has supplies on hand (possibly even kits) for you to make some of of your own. My girls can't wait to give them a try.

And, last week I mentioned the super cute Halloween papers that we just stocked. Aren't they "Boo-tiful"?! Lots of creative possibilities with these. Everything from layouts and cards to treat bag tags. So fun!

I made a yummy batch of pumpkin chocolate chip muffins this week. They were absolutely delicious. (I know because I ate most of them - oops!) I made them with the intent of giving them away but putting such a delicious treat on a boring plate really didn't do them justice. So, I remembered a past post and a creative idea from Judy and whipped up a paper basket in no time at all - took about 3.5 minutes. Not joking! They are that easy to make.

And, if you want some yummy paper (non-edible of course) to make your basket with, check out these new fall papers that Judy's recently stocked. They are beautiful.

The first set above had me drooling, I love those colors and patterns.

And these are simply fall goodness! I have visions of all kinds of things made out of the orange polka dot.

Judy has quite a lot of more new papers in stock. The Halloween lines are so cute but I will wait until next week to show you so we don't overload on yumminess all in one day.

Did you know October is World Card month? It's true. And we've got a fun little contest in the works. Here's the details:

Stop into the store and pick up a supply kit then make a card - simple, huh?!

Here are the official rules:
-You have to use a piece of the 3 elements that we give you and then you can add anything else you'd like.

- You can enter as many times as you'd like.
- All entry's need to be turned in by Oct. 24th.
- Cards will be judged by customers and then donated to an organization that sends them out for card ministry.
- The winner will recieve a gift certificate to Judy's

We are happy to announce two new, upcoming classes.

Jewelry Making Class - Saturday, Oct. 17th - 10am

Come enjoy a jewelry making class taught by the talent Rose Boynton. You'll leave with a necklace and matching pair of earrings. Whether you've new to jewelry making or a pro, this class will fit all levels of experience. Cost is $15 plus materials, call the store for more details.

Fall Inspired Cards - Saturday, Oct. 31 - 10am

This card class will be all about the wonders of fall - there will be cards with leaves, cards with pumpkins and there will even be a few with turkeys. I absolutely love it when one little clever idea (Thanks Cindi) can spark so many other great ideas.

First we showed you just the free standing pumpkins, then the card, and now look at these ideas.

Judy made this little decorative can by using a balloon punch - seriously! A balloon punch! I love how the bottom of the balloon makes a pumpkin stem and the over-all shape is darling. You should know, she made it known that she "one-uped" me. I, of course, denied it over the phone BUT, the pictures don't lie - she did! And it's adorable.

Be sure to look at the punches you have on hand and think of ways you can use them beyond their intended purpose.

And, Rose Boynton brought is this extra large pumpkin - this would be awesome for a harvest themed centerpiece.

and finally, Orono's rec. dept even got involved too. Their afterschool program kids put together this. This would look so great on a window sill or mantle.

October is here! It's the best month ever. My two favorite guys have birthdays this month, fall crafts are the best and plentiful, and it's officially sweater weather! Yay! And, even better, House Mouse has stamps of the month!

If toilet paper pumpkins aren't your thing, we've got another great paper pumpkin idea. This one comes from Cindy Hooks, a favorite customer of ours.

What you do is this:

1- punch out several circles or ovals, 6 to 8.
2- fold them all in half
3- hook them together so that the back of one fold hooks to the back of another fold.
4- repeat step 3 until all circles have been hooked together and a circle is formed.
5- add a stem and some vines and your done!!!

Aren't they cute?!

I took it one step further and will share my idea with you later, check back....

Today is the first day of fall! Fall, as I've already said, is by far my favorite season. I love it.

I was thinking about my to-do list today, it's mostly filled with boring everyday household or work related items. They are all things that need to get done but they aren't fun.

So, in honor of the first day of Fall, I've added something fun to my list.

I'm not sure about where you live but down here on the coast of Maine, the leaves are starting to change. I'm seeing pumpkins placed for sale at road side stands and we've been enjoying my daughters new found baking skills and have been eating up apple crisp like there's no tomorrow. All these things point to fall. It's here and I'm loving it.

Besides the wonderful things already mentioned, fall seems to be the time I pull out my scented candles. I use them more in the fall. Probably because they are a warm welcoming smell when you come in from a cool evening walk. Pumpkin Spice, Apple Butter and Fresh Apple are a few of my fall favorites.

If you want to treat yourself to a comfort scent this season, remember you can buy scented candles at Judy's. She has all different sizes, shapes, and flavors and I'm sure you'll find one you're sure to love.

So, my previous post was about a new way to use toilet paper. You know, thinking outside of the bowl, I mean roll. (hehe) And, while there are many other uses for the this household staple my current use is to turn it into pumpkins.

Now, I have to give credit where credit is due. The seed for my creation actually came home in my daughter's backpack last fall. As a class project they made fabric pumpkins out of a toilet paper roll. I loved the idea. However, like most things I do, I have to add my own twist and do it my way. Don't get me wrong, I like fabric. I do. But I LOVE paper. Making things out of paper is just much more of my thing.

So, without further delay, here is my toilet paper pumpkin using fall pattern paper. (Remember Judy just stocked up on new fall papers)

And, in case you want to make one too, here's how I did it....

1- Gather Supplies. You'll need a roll of toilet paper and 2 or 3 sheets of pattern paper. To add interest to the design, I used two different patterns. And, I also chose thinner paper as it was easier to work with.

2- Cut paper into strips. No measuring needed, you just need several strips and if you want to add some texture, crumple the strips just slightly.

3- Wrap roll. Start by sticking one end of a paper strip into the center of the toilet paper roll. (if needed use a little Scotch Tape to hold it in place.) Then, wrap the strip around the outside of the roll and tuck remaining end of the strip into the center of the roll on the opposite end. Repeat this step until you have completely covered the toilet paper roll and your design is complete.

4 - Add details: I don't have a photo of this step, but to complete the pumpkin, just add a brown paper stem and some twisted green paper strips by sticking them in the hole at the top of the pumpkin. (see photo above for a visual)

And, while I prefer the paper covered variety, here's a look at one of them we made with fabric. I failed to mention that with fabric you just use one big square of fabric and you do not cut it into strips. Instead you just set the t.p. in the center of the square and pull all the fabric to the top of the roll and push it into the hole in the middle of the roll. It's easy but I still like the paper ones better.

It's been a really long time since I've been on the blog. Even longer since I've created something. However, I discovered that sometimes a good supporting friend can be a wonderful muse. After talking to Judy yesterday I got the urge to create.

You'll remember these awesome fabric/chipboard albums from the previous post, well, here's one of mine all decorated. I love how easy it was to decorate. I used my all time favorite - mod-podge - talk about therapy in a bottle, I love that stuff.

For the tree, I used a brown paper bag for the trunk. I crinkled and crumbled it. Inked it a bit and then got it wet to somewhat smooth it back out. The blossoms on the tree were cut out from a sheet of pattern paper I got at Judy's (again seen previous post).

And, while the inside of the album isn't done yet, I did place all the papers in place and have tagged each page with who's picture will go there. I'm excited to finish now and at least I have my creative juices flowing a little bit more.

I mentioned my recent trip to the store, I have a pile of lovely papers, a cool new album and sadly no time to compile them all together. It will happen though, I've got sketches and a whole theme album all dreamed up in my head. In the mean time though, I thought I'd share my current love...

These little cuties are new to me and new stock at Judy's. The are Making Memories, flocked 6x9 chipboard albums. My heart jumps with joy just looking at them. Normal retail is $9.99 but Judy has a bunch and is selling them for $5.99 - that is a steal.

The albums have a flocked fabric on the binding. She has this turquoise color and a fuschia. It looks red but it isn't, it's more pink. Because the majority of the cover is chipboard there are so many possibilities that you could do with these.

Here are the papers I picked out for my first album. My theme and subject matter is a surprise but wouldn't these make a fun mother's day project, friends album, life's best book, etc... again, so many possibilities.

Card and Envelope Album - Work It Wednesday

So, yesterday I mentioned how I like to use cards and card packs in my crafting. There really are lots of things you can do with those packs besides just use them for cards. Here's an example and step-by-step instructions on how to make a mini-album from a card pack. The album is made from both the envelopes and the cards. (Some of you made these with me at our last crop but it's always good to have a reminder. Enjoy!)

1- Find a card pack you love. Judy's has a bunch of different options. (The set I used will be available on Friday but in limited quantities) See HERE for a past post on other card packs we carry!

2 & 3 - Set aside the cards for now and choose a number of envelopes you'll use to make your album. I used 4 for my samples but you could use as many as you'd like. You will make a chain, so to speak, of envelopes by gluing the flap of one envelope onto the front of another. Be sure to line them up well with one another as this will help it align better once it's folded into an album.

4 - To make your album covers, place a piece of chipboard inside the first and last envelopes. This will help make your album a little stiffer which helps protect your pages from getting bent when viewed.

5 - Fold flap over on the first envelope to hide the chipboard that is inside. For the back envelope, cover with paper or card of your choice. Then carefully fold up your album accordion style.

6 - Insert a card, and center, in each fold of your album.

7 - Once you have them centered, punch to small holes through both the card and envelope. (holes should line up on the crease of the folds in both the cards and hooked together envelopes - see completed album photo if clarification is needed)

8 - Thread ribbon or string through holes and tie in place. Knot or bow can either go inside the card or on the outside of the envelope.

9 - When ribbon is attached you should have something that looks like this and is ready to decorate. Notice you can add a card to the crease on the back as well.

Below are some photos of the completed album we made at the crop. We used a card set from Kaiser and these sets come in tons of different colors and styles. Stop in and check them out!

I was looking over some of my past creations and I found that I tend to use a lot of blank cards in my designs. Tomorrow I'll be sharing a whole mini album made from a card pack but today I thought I'd just show a quick use for a blank card.

Cards come in all sizes. I like to use them to make additional pages in my mini-albums. For this page I actually cut the card in half and glued the back side to the album page. Now I have more room for journaling or photos. Plus, I like the little added surprise it gives of knowing there is an interactive element to the page.

Work It Wednesday - Waterfall Books

Believe it or not, it is still Wednesday. Here are the step-by-step instructions for the waterfall albums I made last week. Plus, you can also see the original books I made a few years ago that inspired last Friday's post, you'll probably recognize them from being in the store.

Let's begin with the binding:

1) Cut a 12x12 paper in half so it measures 6x12.
2) Turn paper over and using a ruler and pen, mark at every inch all the way down the paper. (you'll have 11 marks)

3) Score and then carefully fold on the pen marks you made.
4) Accordion fold your paper so it looks like photo shown above when done.

5) Starting at the back of your book, place a 6x12 piece of paper on the end of the accordion folded paper.
6) Continue adding additional pages as shown. NOTE: Be sure to only add adhesive as shown above in photo. If you add adhesive to both sides (peaks) of the accordion paper, your book will not open! Also, if you are wanting your pages to waterfall (see next photo below) you will want to cut them one inch shorter than the last. So, you started with a 6x12 as your back page, your next page will be 6x11, then 6x10, and so forth. (you can make these any lengths you want. For monogram books like the Girl and Lucky book at the bottom of this post I adjusted my page length to fit the word I was spelling.)

7) After all your pages are added you will have something that looks like photo shown above. Just as a tip, when adding your pages, make sure they line up on the top and bottom with the pages below them.
8) Add adhesive inside each fold on the back side of your binding. This will close it up and allow it to lay flat and open like a book.

9) Cut a piece of vellum and adhere to remaining front flap.
10) Using a scrap of paper cover the edge of your binding to complete your book.
11) Next you decorate, add photos, journaling, and embellishments as you wish.

Here are the books that inspired my creation from last week:

For the Lucky book I used a plain vellum folded in half and using a spray adhesive I added flowers between the folds. I did this on the book from last week too. Instead of flowers though, I did circles to make polka-dots.

The Girl book was done very much the same only I bought patterned vellum from Judy. She has a great selection of pattern vellums, here's just a few in case you want to make a book of your own.

For information purposes you should know this is, umm maybe 'was' is a better term, my kitchen table. In fact after I pulled an all-nighter last night (went to bed at 5am and back up at 6:30am) this was the conversation I had with my husband as he was looking for a place to sit to eat his breakfast. All you kitchen table scrappers just might relate.

Me: "Sorry for the big mess in the kitchen."

Hubby: "I hadn't noticed."

Me: "You didn't notice the mess?!!!"

Hubby: "No! I hadn't notice that we had a kitchen!"

Despite the mess, and I'm only showing you about a 1/4 of it, the creative process was wonderful. I didn't not re-create the scrapbooking wheel, in fact, I borrowed from past ideas. But I love what I did, and now have two new mini-albums to share with you. BUT... you'll have to wait because I'm late for work!

Do you think I should tell my boss that I got 1.5 hours of sleep - nah! He doesn't need to know.

Both of these albums I made based off of past projects. I tweaked them so they are different but the ideas came from things I've already made. If you'd like to see the original projects I can post those on another day.

First up: Waterfall album - this was originally a class called "lucky Me" at the shop. We used monogram letters. Ring any bells?
Second: I had some left over Daisy D's paper from our last crop and made a little board book. These board books are fabulous for quick projects. I've talked about them before on the blog but that really are worth repeating. (Go buy one!!!)

So there they are. I had fun and it was so worth the mess!

Pot Pies, Paper & Perfection...

I'm back. Thank you for your patience while I was taking a little blog break. I needed it! Not sure about you but I go through spells where I feel like I'm the least creative person alive. Then, I take a break, play with my food and miracles happen....

After I created this lovely masterpiece for my little one, I sorted paper into piles and now I'm ready to go. I've been wanting for a long time to work on books for my daughters. To simplify the process, I sorted a big stack of papers into piles that fit their personality.

I have a pink pile, a purple pile and a blue-green pile. A pile for each girl and the good thing is that all the papers work together and it takes out the guess work. Now I just need to add my photos and create.

And, something else that has happened while I was away - Judy has received several new shipments. I'll show you some more of the new items in upcoming posts but for now, here's a yummy treat. These little goodies are new in our store and were featured on the Oprah List.

And, if you need to spark your imagination, buy a package and then before you eat them, make a food creation (like my pot-pie man with cheese eye lashes and apple hair ).... it will spark your creativity and make you very happy - I promise!

I was going to post this yesterday for Work It Wednesday but blinked and Wednesday disappeared. So, forgive my lateness....

Here's a quick idea. If you have a lot of page protectors laying around and you are looking for something new to try in your albums, you can actually turn your page protector into your layout.

I don't have step-by-steps to show you but basically what I did was determine where I wanted to place the photo and then did some hand stitching to make a little floating pocket. From there I placed my other elements as needed and viola! Done.

The thing I like about this is that it gives my layout a look like it was done on a transparency or acrylic piece but all the major parts are under the sleeve and still protected in my album.

Give it a try.

Work It Wednesday - Feb 18th

It's Wednesday. Which really is a bummer because I've been thinking it was Thursday all day. It's not. It's just Wednesday which means I should share a quick Work It Wednesday idea. Today's idea is not a new idea but it's one I love and was reminded about recently when I was compiling some of my favorite layouts together.

The idea is to use hinges to hide your journaling, make more space on your layout, and to add interest to your design. Hinges were big a few years ago. You can get them in pretty much any shape, size, and finish you want but for me the smaller the better. I've never been big on bulk and so small hinges mean flat, and I like flat.

Here's a few up close shots of what it looks like and how it works:

The easiest way to add a hinge is to adhere your paper with hidden journaling (white paper in photo) to the inside of the back plate. I just used a double sided adhesive to do so. Then attach the front paper (pink in photo) with brads to the front plate. It really is that simple!

Now, I know what you are thinking. How will the journaling be read if it's in a page protector? Well, I don't really worry about that. Those that want to read it will pull it out and do so, others will see what's on front and move on. If that doesn't work for you, you could cut a slit in your page protector to allow the hidden journaling to be seen.

And, don't think you can only use hinges on layouts. They work great on cards too!

School Sports

Judy has been busy. She has put together a little area that has several different basic layouts for different sports. The idea is that you can find your school/team, grab the paper, and the titles and then whatever else you want to go on it. She has made up several different basic pages. I say basic because they are just a starting point so to speak - you can take the foundations that she's created and then make them be whatever you want them to be. You can see she has most of the local high schools, the University of Maine and of course, the Red Sox.

If you don't like creating your own titles with the letters she has collected, you can just buy pre-printed sports papers as well, like these....

Stop in and check it out. It just might inspire you to scrapbook your favorite sports team.

2.5 of my 3 kids are sick. It's bad for them but it's kind of nice for me as it allows me to slow down, cancel commitments, stay home and play catch up on things while they rest. I've got lots to show you this week but to kick things off I wanted to share this....
